Review by Larissa Archer: Rough unprecious oil paintings on wood focus on the hot desolate landscape of the Southern California rural areas. Houses stand alone with drawn blinds in the windows, trailers or 80s era Volvos at the ready. Cars speed down the highway. Taco trucks stand unmanned, surrounded by empty chairs. Yeskel paints his California as a place to escape from, and the sense is that the place is already half-abandoned.

Jack Fischer Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of a solo show by Los Angeles based painter, Scott Yeskel. A rich marriage of abstraction and the representational, Yeskel’s work always springs from the same source: the urban landscape of Southern California and its sprawling outskirts of mountains, freeways and airports.

The sights are familiar to most Californians: taco trucks, Airstream trailers, and old Volvos parked outside Spanish tiled condos with requisite palm trees. In part, these represent the sheer ubiquity of cars and other vehicles in that vast, dry terrain, so often traversed on four wheels. Sometimes Yeskel depicts the difficulties of this peripatetic lifestyle with paintings of traffic jams, car crashes, and a thick, hazy smog that his palette captures faultlessly. But there is also a hint of romanticism there. This is especially true of the abstracts, which possess a real sense of grace and rationality. Their titles betray, however, that they are of the same provenance: Bridge View, Presidio, Desert Highway.

Scott Yeskel possesses a B.F.A from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. This will be his second solo show at the Jack Fischer Gallery.

The show will open on the 7th of July, with an opening reception for the artist on Saturday the 9th from 3:00 to 5:00. Mapping California will remain on view until August 20th.

L.A. Art Fair Month is about to come to an end. Wow. I like all the different fairs. I've read that we need something massive and all inclusive like Art Basel here which would be great, but all these (smaller) fairs are very diverse and therefore very interesting in their own right. And in true L.A. fashion, they are spread out, from Santa Monica to Downtown and back but worth the ride.

Have you ever pondered the various ways of transforming your painting muse into an abstract expression of how or what you feel? Seems a bit complicated, but worth a shot, right? Following are some of Scott Yeskel's instructive ideas for abstract painting:

2010-header1. Take a photo of a specific scene that you are fond of, whether it's a Downtown busy street, the ocean, a sweeping meadow, etc. and
2. begin to understand its rhythm. Is it calm? frantic?

3. Does it overlap in size and shape,

4. is it warm or cool?

5. Next, take your picture and crop it, blow it up,

6. imagine it from a birds eye view.

A workshop by Los Angeles Artist Scott Yeskel exploring themethods and ideas of contemporary Abstract Painting. Yeskel derives his inspiration from the Landscape and incorporates thick layers of oil paint to come up with abstract imagery of cities, atmosphere, structures and masses. The workshop will cover how to use a photographic reference to start your painting, how to work ala prima with oils, and how to know when a piece is complete. Various Demos will be performed as well as a brief talk about Yeskel’s work and inspiration. Acrylic paints can be used in place of oils. Material list will be provided before the first class. No Class 11/25.

The sun, the sand, the ocean Southern California is, truly, a paradise. Alas, to get to the beach and the ocean, you most likely have to hit the highway — and that means traffic. Lots of it.
Scott Yeskel, a New Jersey native now living on the West Coast, is at once dismayed and inspired by the effects of urban sprawl. While he hates the enervating effects of traffic gridlock, it can’t help but inform his art. When he goes to paint, Yeskel told American Style magazine last year, he strives to take the “unattractive elements of urban sprawl and make them personal, poetic, beautiful.” Many of his paintings, like the one pictured here, feature cars. “They speak of our journeys, moods, where we are going, where we’ve been,” he told the magazine. “They also speak of how separated we can be at times.”
Yeskel’s work, both abstract and representational landscapes, is on display today through Oct. 29 in Studio 30 at the Vita Art Center, 432 Ventura Ave., Ventura. A reception will be held tonight from 6 to 9. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and weekends by appointment. Call 644-9214 or visit http://www.vitaartcenter.com for information. Los Angeles based artist Scott Yeskel has been painting his love/hate affair with Southern California since his relocation to the area six years ago. Traffic snarls, boxy apartments and occasional car crashes often act as Yeskel's muse. It is when Scott switches to his abstract work, his love affair with the spirit and color of the West appear. That's right, Scott paints both abstract and representational landscapes switching back and forth using many of the same colors and themes. Inspired by mid-century masters such as Diebenkorn and Richter yet original in both content and style, Yeskel's oil paintings are true statements of contemporary California living. Yeskel's frequent visits to Ventura has served as a nice respite to his hectic Hollywood neighborhood. The sea and crisp air have inspired a current mix of colorful visions of the seaside town mixed in, of coarse, with his iconic L.A. cityscapes.

I traded Liz Maher for this piece above last time I was in S.F. She is in a group show at the Barber Lounge. Her funny, spunky whimsical works are going somewhere.

Although I am not totally clueless when it comes to the L.A. Gallery scene, I rarely hit up openings anymore. I still feel much more in touch with San Francisco's more intimate and eclectic scene. Even if the work is kinda so-so in S.F. is still feels genuine. The opposite can be said for most of the work I see here in L.A.

so...been really busy thus the lack of posts here. But I do have to report that SGFA has put me in their 'Meet the Artists 9' show once again at the Pacific Club this year, October 15th. Its one of my favorite events to participate in because I get to actually chat with collectors and other artists alike. and the food is always good.

as some of you know, we have moved to house in Hollywood and I am using our back room for a studio space. Things have been working out well and I am getting back into painting larger pieces.
The 'group cityscape' show is up until the end of the month at SGFA and I have other shows planned for the Fall as well as the Art Fairs in the Winter. So, lots to look forward to. The Group Cityscape show is up at SGFA and it looks good! I am in the South Gallery with Kim Cogan which is pretty sweet.

Scott Yeskel seems to incorporate elements of all the above artists--that is to say that he is stylistically all over the map. For example, “Her Old Mercedes Benz” is a monochromatic, somewhat ghostly, greenish-ochre composition that can be seen as a portrait of a shiny status symbol that has been consigned to oblivion, like a fading starlet. Then again, he creates a visual wild ride in “Inner Coastal,” an abstract impressionist painting dominated by brilliant oranges and red, with touches of blue and black that convey an ambiguous melding of water and sky, with perhaps a road in between. What matters is that this painting, along with “Bends,” “Transit Map” and “Last Bridges,” among others, departs from the lugubrious ghostliness that permeates paintings like “Taco Truck,” an over-mined and exhausted effect. While conventional wisdom holds that painters should focus on a signature style or subject matter, Yeskel thumbs his nose at consistency, and therein rests the appeal of his body of work.

I also teach a class now called creative foundations. It incorporates a lot of 'found-object' art. The kids gathered pine cones and other organic materials. I then wrapped these birthday balloons around them to make 'Mama, Papa and Baby'.

So last week I went up to San Francisco for undisclosed personal and professional reasons. Everyone knows how I feel about San Francisco. I love it. Its glorious hills, bohemian culture, phenomenal food, amazing museums and galleries. Its a world class city in the likes of Paris and Amsterdam, America's bold, liberal, creative beacon of hope. Well, that's how I used to feel. I stayed in the Mission and its dirtier than I remembered. I mean super dirty, but that's cool. I like dirt. I ate at Pancho Villa and Taqueria Cancun. The food was cheap. I drank at Cassanovas. Two beers, 3 bucks. Ok sounds good, right? Well, then my car got keyed on Shotwell St.. I mean really fucken keyed. Then, two nights later my car was broken into, shattered windows and all on 14th St. Ugh. Is it because I have a mid-size SUV w/ Honda of Hollywood plates? Is San Francisco too cool to give a shit? Yes.
People had a hard time with my plight. Is it my Rayban Wayfarers, my wifes designer shoes, our L.A.-centric attitude? Sorry I like cable TV. Screw me if I am a heterosexual. Sorry we registered at Bloomingdales. And no, our cake was not vegan.
What has happened to me, I finally love L.A. and San Francisco hates me.

Ok, so there is this Donut Jamboree Art Happening Thursday at the studio of Laddie John Dill in Venice that is in conjunction with the Venice Art Walk. I was in the Venice Art Walk auction a couple of years ago and it was awesome and I've been trying to get back into it with little success. On the fliers this year, they say, "Send us a Donut"! Crap I paint and draw donuts all the time, that's funny. So I sent them a drawing I just completed and they put it on their email blast. Hmmmmm. Have not heard from them otherwise but I guess I'm excited that they liked mine enough to include my work. It says it will be projected during the party. The party's $50, think they'll let me in for free?

I have been working on a lot of abstract studies, both on wood and canvas, small to medium size, trying constantly to keep the energy going in them. I am finding the more time I spend with them, the more I want to go back and create additional line work. Its challenging but rewarding to weigh the push and pull in the work.

Last Thursday night at the L.A. Downtown Art Walk proved to be another exciting night for the raucous art scene Downtown. The monthly event is actually transforming parts of Downtown into a beacon of real energy. Nevermind the credibility of certain 'art galleries' Downtown, this Art Walk is just seriously fun! Every bar and restaurant is packed, street vendors are mobbed, people of all kinds are into it. My favorite spot for the past couple of months has been this little nook of a gallery space next to the old Regency Theater on Main between 3 & 4th. The artist pictured above gets super into it with oil bars, depicting lucious layers of skin overlapping into beautiful compositions. His work is part Jenny Saville, part Francis Bacon and all totally real and inspiring. The models are also excellent, doing long form poses in intimate and unique configurations. Perfect for both the art muse and voyeur, his work trandscends the 'gimic' you think you've encountered. Dont know his name, or the gallery, all I know is that its worth checking out. I've been trying to keep busy painting and teaching and recently have completed alot of new work including all of those that are jumbled together in the pictures of my studio below. I also just finished one of my first paintings that featured a dog.

I just got back form another road trip cross country, this time with my brother. He got an opportunity to work in Atlanta and I went with him for the ride.... the skies started off blue...
but quickly turned an ominous cold
but, ofcoarse we had to stop at the Big Texan to attempt the 72 ounce steak challenge...

thank god I convinced Ross not to do it. Nothing like getting back into the car with your younger brother after he shovels half a cow down his throat
we got stuck in Oklahoma due to some severe ice storms. Even rough and tumble local cowboys and truckers were shocked by the weather. It looks sunny but the roads were totally frozen. So we made the best of it and decided to shoot some hoops. The local news thought we were crazy.
so... "you're form L.A., have you ever seen this kind of ice and snow before". No replied Ross, "but I did see a 72 ounce steak a while back"

The L.A. Art Show was great. I was there most of the week and the turnout was exciting. The parties were fun and I got to see alot of friends, new and old. I sold some work, and am left inspired to create more !

Los Angeles 2035

For all its car culture, the Bay Area's southern cousin has a large and growing rail and rapid bus system. Los Angeles transit maps tend to be of two varieties: the stylish official maps produced by Metro Design Studio and CHK (this map borrows heavily from Metro's project maps), and fantasy maps (there's also this map, the original version of which we developed, for an ambitious but serious citizen proposal). The map below portrays what the L.A. system should look like in 25 years, based on the Measure R tax plan approved by voters in the 2008 election (note that it does not includes two projects that haven't yet been defined, in the 405 corridor over Sepulveda Pass and along the Santa Ana Branch right-of-way). The map also suggests a design direction we believe Metro ought to consider: while geographic accuracy over such a vast scale (this maps covers roughly 2,000 square miles) requires design compromises, Tube-style maps only make sense where systems are so complex as to require radical simplification, and where the mental maps of most residents aren't more or less built around the road network. So how about a hybrid, like in Washington?

I started teaching at the Montecito Fine Arts School of Design in Brea and Monrovia. Its great to teach kids (high school, middle school) how to draw. We drew donuts on Saturday, a favorite exercise of mine to study organic, eliptical shapes.

A lot of people want to see him go after McCain, the way McCain is doing so, pronounce his agenda like he did in the beginning, continue his rhetoric that we all fell in love with. He's just keeping it cool people. He's bobbin' and weavin, picking his spots, floating like a butterfly, and possible, hopefully stinging like a 'B' when it counts, November 4th!

I am eagerly looking forward to Barack Obama's historic speech tonight in Denver. He has successfully and miraculously gotten this countries attention and peers to be the anti-bush we have all been praying for. But is he? Will this convention point to Barack as a moderate mediator, looking for a golden ticket, or the true democratic messiah we have all been looking for? Barack is not Jesus, he certainly is not Mosiach and we all hope he is not the next American celebrity obsession. What he appears to be is a genuine man with a strong vision for this country. Young people have rallied in the support of Barack in record numbers because we remain to be dreamers. Lennon taught my parent's generation to be dreamers, Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy, JFK all gave there lives for a dream. Obama harkens back the ideals of these great 20th century innovators who thrived in era that demanded change and progress. Politics aside, Barack is at least a bold beacon of hope. I trust his instincts and admire his tenacity. Young people don't care about experience. Look what Cheney and Rumsfeld brought to the table with theirs. Young people admire a presidential candidate with a fall away jump shot, that text messages Scarlett Johansen, that inspires street art and fashion and that talks to the French with ease. Barack isn't a flash in the pan celebrity, his hipness isn't a fluke, yet his chances to be President somehow now balance on these precarious assumptions. I just hope Tom Cruise isn't there tonight with Oprah.
